Our home away from home, High Chaparral aka Casa Codorniz, Bullhead City, Arizona.

High Chaparral

We missed the water and our plans of spending winters during our “Golden Years” in Mexico were blown up by the Mexican drug cartels.

Exploring other options we visited south Texas and scratched that off the list.

Spring of 2012 we scheduled a vacation to Lake Havasu to see if we liked it there. We both fell in love with the area but Havasu was way too busy and NOISEY! While in a Havasu tackle shop we asked the clerk where he liked to fish and he suggested Lake Mohave.

We drove to Bullhead City and spent a few days looking around. While exploring the outback we found this very interesting subdivision out in the desert near Katherine Landing marina. Drove up and down the few subdivision roads(more like jeep trails) there were looking for for sale signs. Found only one! Later Paulette called the number from the for sale sign and discovered it was for a couple lots that were down in a wash.

We left Bullhead City disappointed but liked the area very much!

Long story short Paulette found this repo on the internet that fit our budget. Low and behold it was in Lake Mohave View Ranchos, the very subdivision we fell in love with! The Hel Tig Ranch, a 2 bedroom frame house with the roof blown off! Our desert retreat fixer upper.

The Sonoran Desert in Bloom

There’s something about the desert that speaks to my soul. Perhaps it’s the stark contrast to my Kansas upbringing, where the rolling Flint Hills offered a different kind of beauty altogether. Out here in the Sonoran Desert during springtime, though… well, that’s a…
